Tory helps his old man build up The Frog

My first job as a kid was a paper route. The thing I got up so early in the morning for? A 1/10 scale RC car called The Frog, by Tamiya. A couple of friends and I saved up for months to buy these cars (Eric had The Hornet, and Steve had The Ultima) and we tinkered and raced and loved them. Putting them together was part of the process – The Frog came as a big box of parts and a book on how to assemble.

I have no idea what became of my old beloved Frog. I suppose I grew out of it and left it behind when I went off to college. Nostalgia.

How excited was I when I heard that Tamiya had reissued The Frog (and a few other models like The Hornet)? Well I was even more excited when Eric sent me an entire Frog kit – with the radio, battery, and charger too!

Tory and I had a blast putting it together. Maybe I should make him deliver papers for a few months first…

The first few pieces come together Tory cuts out the pieces Questioning if this is right... must be, let's move on. Starting to come together Tory with the basic framework. Assembling the gearbox. Oil dampened shocks assembled. Motor mounted. Servos in place. Fairly well complete. Just need the body painted and fitted. Tory and Tegan on the Horizon

Fall means canyoneering around here, so we headed down to the North Wash area of Southern Utah. It’s located between Hanksville and Lake Powell – essentially BFE. Heather, Josh, and Sirisa, as well as Babbie, Brad, Tai, and Aspen showed up too – But the first morning was just us. We took the kids through a canyon called Lucky Charms – a perfect little slot for kids.

Tory got on rope and let me lower him down a 30ft rappel. He was a little nervous at first, but was determined to do it. And he liked it!

There aren’t more shots simply because lugging the camera through skinny, sandy, hands-on canyons is a pain. We need to get a little point and shoot for these kinds of things.

The main reason I’ve missed so much is our camera had a series of unfortunate events… but we’ve got it back now so I’ve no longer got an excuse for not posting.

Aunt Jenny stopped in for a few days while on route to Crested Butte. We tried to convince her to stay but her heart was set on a return to her old stomping grounds. I don’t blame her, Kari and I both had many good years in CB.

Scrambling up in Little Wild Horse Canyon

On day two of our recent trip to the desert we decided to explore Little Wild Horse canyon just southwest of Goblin Valley. It’s a non technical slot canyon that has a little bit of everything, except the drops and swims. I’m tempted to call this Tory’s first real canyon as he hiked nearly all of the 6 miles by himself, and did great scrambling and climbing around. I’m wondering if to call it his first there would need to be ropes and at least one rappel… but perhaps I’m over thinking it. :)

Sometimes 'hiking' for Tory is more like 'riding.' Click Tory's head for more.

We’ve done quite a bit of camping with the kids, but up to now it’s been of the car-based variety. We decided to change that in August with an overnight in the Uintas.

Tory and I slept in bivy’s, and after waking to a drizzle and cold kids, we were forced out too early. It was a lot of work for what we got, but it was all worth it.

It’s been a couple of weeks now (Judging from my timeliness, they must have been very busy weeks?) but Grandpa and Grandma Moe came to visit, along with Tracy, Marcus, and Jacob. They were able to rent the condo directly above us, which allowed us to be together quite a bit without being directly on top of one another, (ba-dump-dump) in the figurative way. There was hiking and walks, dinners in and a little wine, a concert at Deer Valley and a 5am stake out. Click on the above photo, there’s a few more shots where that came from.

We headed south to Yuba State Park for a weekend of camping, beaching, and boating. Four families and one dog spent three days in the heat, eating drinking, surfing, swimming, laughing, and playing. My sister Jenny and I’s (is that a word??) grandfather was put into a nursing home recently, and we decided to plan a trip to visit him while he’s still sharp witted. She flew in (from Oregon) a few days early to hang here with us and get to spend a little time with the kids. Our sister Sarah decided to fly in from Minnesota as well, so we had a nice little 4 day family reunion.

We all had a really nice time, and Tory was really happy to get to spend some time with his aunts. A few things you’ll see in the pics are a trip to the Park Silly Sunday Market, a hiking excursion up Guardsman’s Pass, and an evening at the Deer Valley Wednesday concert.
