After failing to get on the river at Flaming Gorge earlier this spring, we gave it another go – this time with the Marsh’s. We spent two days on the river, camping just below the Little Hole boat ramp.
We arrived the night before and camped at the Canyon Rim campground and secured the site that Kari had been eyeing since the last trip. Great views above the reservoir and a beautiful sunrise.
We rented a boat for the Marsh’s, and a trailer to run both boats down to the dam put-in. After reading about how chaotic the put-in could be, it all went fairly smooth. While Kari and Casey ran the shuttle, Joel and Calvin and I rigged the boats in the upper parking lot.
The weather was fantastic – apparently it’s been raining nearly every day – but we had full sun for all three days. Joel and the kids fished, as did Kari. She may be taking up fly fishing as a regular activity it seems. She caught on to the art of casting pretty quick, with tips from Joel.
The river is pretty mellow overall, with a couple of class 2+ rapids to keep us on our toes. Tory was pretty freaked the morning before we hit Red Creek rapid, but after getting through he said it was fun. I hope he can get over his fear of the rapids… I know it isn’t much fun for him when he’s scared, but we’ve all taken to rafting – and the rapids are surely part of the fun.
Tegan washed the dishes one night – I mention it because it’s a milestone… never has a kid voluntarily pitched in on dish duty. I think it was fun for her to be responsible for some chores.
All in all a super fun trip – we really enjoyed hanging with the Marsh’s and Tory got to spend a weekend with his best friend Jeremiah.
Also, we named the boat Buttercup!
